I'm Not Sorry and My Art is Being Shown

I've been looking at my kindle a lot lately. As a result I've not been making art, nor have I been making much progress on my physical health...although I did sort of give up drinking for a while. Alas! Every time I post an update publicly it usually involves any mixture of the following:
  • Excuses
  • Guilt
  • Apologies
"Golly! I sure am sorry I haven't been painting...even though no one asked me to do this, and it's all on me, and I'm the one who is holding myself to this standard..."

"I apologize for eating that extra cookie. I know you're all are losing sleep over it."

Well the truth is, I don't feel bad about not having painted for a couple of weeks. It has been awesome to have been so engrossed in a story that I've let that responsibility slide. Being disciplined is important and so is enjoying life. My painting skills will still be there when I go back to it; I'm confident about it.

That being said, I am more excited than ever to get back into it. I've been brainstorming new projects. The possibilities are swarming around in my mind, so much so that I can't seem to decide which project sounds more appealing. Another landscape? A portrait? What direction should I take my next painting in? What will it mean for my art? What kind of an artist will I become?

Meanwhile, I set up my artwork in the Chase Tower Friday night. It will be up in the "Indiana Artists" hallway for the month of May. Most of the work I chose comes from my collection on paper. It's the perfect opportunity to see some work that I've never shown before. Mostly because I finally saved up some money to have the work framed.

I love my works on paper, so I'm thrilled to finally show off these pieces. Looking online is one thing...seeing in person is a completely different experience. You miss subtle artistic aspects of the paintings if you limit yourself to online viewing...also, I use a lot more glitter than you would probably expect.

I do however, have one oil on canvas painting in the midst, breaking up the continuity (which I suppose is a bad thing? I don't know, you tell me).

I have included, in the center of the display, my "Land of the Fearful," because I couldn't not. This is the first year in my short life that the Indiana Primaries might actually make a difference. Each of the primary candidates for our future POTUS are making appearances in the state to rally voters.

I think this painting demonstrates the fear of the unknown future that many voters are facing.

When I first began this painting in the summer of 2012, it wasn't political. I was working somewhere where any young woman, me included, could be made to feel very sexualized. I'd never been exposed to this kind of environment before, and it made me question how to behave in the face of something inappropriate, scary, and unknown.

As I continued the painting, it took on a new life as I felt very similar about the politics of the time. I felt pressured to feel a certain way about hot topics such as abortion, gun rights, gay rights, all of the rights, really. Coming into adulthood, it was frightening realizing that I needed to have opinions on these issues. It was important that I knew what I believed because I...me... a young twenty-something girl who hadn't yet started drinking black coffee and paying utilities, I would be partially responsible for the direction our country went in...and I was just as afraid of this responsibility as I was of being taken advantage of in the work place.

PictureJon Snow, the president we need (please come back to life).
The feeling of being vulnerable is frightening. As a country, I think we often feel like we're losing control (despite none of us ever really having it in the first place). But we can't let this fear drive us to making rash decisions like voting for a raving orange lunatic...(oops, got a little too political, sorry not sorry).

Okay okay, I'll calm down. Whoever you decide to vote for, whether it's republican, democrat, independent, or a write in ballot of Jon Snow (I'm not saying this is what I'm going to do...but I'm not saying it's not). Just don't do it out of fear. Don't let your fear for the future become a self-fullfilling prophesy.

Be confident, be open, be wise.

Vote for Jon Snow! Buy Angela's Art! (what, how'd that get in there? heh heh.)

How did this post become all about Game of Thrones? Oh! New episode tonight!! Gotta go read up on fan theories. That said, go check out the art.

Yours,

Angela
